Stephen Gilchrist serves as the Chairman and CEO of the South Carolina African American Chamber of Commerce (SCAACC), where he leads a network of over 15,000 businesses across the Carolinas. With a steadfast commitment to empowering African American entrepreneurs, Mr. Gilchrist focuses on addressing the unique challenges of both large and small minority-owned businesses. His leadership emphasizes educational reform, alternative energy solutions, and economic security in underserved communities.
Appointed by President Donald Trump, Stephen Gilchrist has served as a Commissioner of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights since May 13, 2020. In this role, which extends through November 2025, he has worked to uphold and expand civil rights protections, further solidifying his dedication to equity and justice.
In addition to his contributions to commerce and civil rights, Stephen is actively involved in community service. He serves as the Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission in South Carolina, a Minister of Music, and a member of the Mastercard Master Your Card Corporate Advisory Board, where he addresses financial inclusion for unbanked and underbanked communities.
Mr. Gilchrist's leadership and advocacy have been widely recognized. He has been featured in Black Enterprise Magazine and Carolina Daily, celebrated as one of the nation’s most influential Black business leaders. His expertise has also been showcased on major news networks, including CNN, FOX News, and MSNBC.
Stephen holds academic credentials from South Carolina State University, The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and the South Carolina Executive Institute. His educational foundation underpins his strategic vision for fostering economic development and creating pathways for African American businesses to thrive.
Under Stephen Gilchrist’s leadership, SCAACC continues to champion the growth of minority-owned businesses, driving policies that create opportunities for African American entrepreneurs and ensuring their pivotal role in the economic prosperity of the Carolinas.
